Settle in. Let the bed hold your whole weight. You don't have to hold any of it yourself.

There was once a teacher who lived in a small house at the edge of a mountain village.

It rained often there. The roof was old, and the rain made a soft, steady sound that everyone in the village had grown up hearing.

One afternoon a visitor came up the path — a learned man, very full of what he knew.

He sat down and began to talk. He talked about texts and teachers and everything he had already understood.

The old teacher listened, and while he listened, he poured tea.

The cup filled. And he kept pouring. The tea reached the rim, and then it spilled over onto the table, and then onto the floor.

The visitor jumped up. Stop, he said. It's full. No more will go in.

The teacher set the pot down gently and said: yes. You are like this cup. You are already full.

How can I show you anything until you empty a little of what you carry?

Outside, the rain went on, patient, unbothered, filling the gutters and running away down the hill.

You are carrying a full cup tonight. Tomorrow's list. The conversation you replayed. The worry that has no ending.

You don't need to solve them. You only need to pour a little out, so there's room for rest.

Let one thought leave. Then another. Let them run down the hill with the rainwater.

The visitor stayed the night. He didn't learn a single new idea. He slept better than he had in years.

In the morning the rain had stopped and the whole valley smelled like wet stone and green things.

Breathe in. Breathe out. Something is leaving with each breath, and you don't have to name it.

The cup is emptier now. The room is quiet. The rain is doing all the work.

Rest. There is nothing left in the cup that can't wait until morning.
